GRIEG MØTER TSJAIKOVSKI Årets sommeropera, Tsjaikovskijs Eugene Onegin, vil være startskuddet for et årlig sommerakademi hvor unge sangere og musikere får faglig inspirasjon og input fra profilerte internasjonale operakunstnere / pedagoger mens de medvirker i operaprosjektet. Formålet er å gi unge sangere og instrumentalister anledning til å arbeide med opera under erfaren veiledning. Et slikt tilbud gir både et faglig løft i tillegg til innsikt i andre kunstfelt gjennom samhandlingen med ulike kunstformer i en operaproduksjon. Sommerakademier for unge kunstnere finnes en rekke steder, og særlig i USA er disse akademiene utviklet til viktige arenaer for unge kunstneres utvikling. Ofte er sommerakademiene knyttet opp til sommerfestivaler, operafestivaler eller lignende. Den Nye Opera vil utvikle sommerakademiet i årene fremover slik at det kan gi Vestlandet en arena for talentfulle unge kunstnere. Publikum vil oppleve akademiet i form av forestillinger, konserter og andre begivenheter. Dirigenten Kjell Seim vil være musikalsk leder for sommeroperaen og sommerakademiet. Sommerakademiets arrangeres i samarbeid med Ung Symfoni. Griegakademiet ved Universitetet i Bergen, deltar også i planleggingen med formål å bidra til akademiet på lengre sikt.

Den Nye Opera og Ung Symfoni vil gi unge musikere og sangere et best mulig tilbud, og er stolte av å ha fått instruktører i verdensklasse til det første sommerakademiet.

På instrumentalsiden kommer tre instruktører fra Chicago Symphony Orchestra:

John Bruce Yeh

John Bruce Yeh is a native of Los Angeles, has been a member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra since 1977. He currently is the orchestra's Assistant Principal Clarinetist. Yeh is also the Director of the chamber ensemble Chicago Pro Musica, which he organized in 1979, and a founding member of the Chicago Symphony Winds.

John Bruce Yeh performs as soloist with orchestras throughout America and Europe, most recently with the Taipei Symphony and the Haddonfield (NJ) Philharmonic. In April 1998, he gave the American premiere of the Elliott Carter Clarinet Concerto with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Yeh has performed several times with the Guarneri String Quartet, the Ying Quartet, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, and Alexander Schneider and Friends. Among his many recordings are two works written for him by Easly Blackwood. Other recordings include works by Stravinsky, Bernstein, Morton Gould, Victor Babin, and Artie Shaw. Mr. Yeh was a prizewinner at the 1982 Munich International Music Competition and the 1985 Naumburg Clarinet Competition in New York. As a member of Chicgo Pro Musica, Mr. Yeh was honored with the Grammy in 1986 for the “Best New Classical Artist” from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. The son of music-loving scientists, Mr. Yeh pursued premedical studies at UCLA prior to entering the Juilliard School of Music in New York in 1975. He was a 1976 Fromm Fellow at Tanglewood, where he studied with Harold Wright of the Boston Symphony, and received the Benjamin H. Delson Memorial Award as Outstanding Instrumentalist.

Tage Larsen

Tage Larsen joined the Chicago Symphony Orchestra as Fourth/Utility Trumpet in 2002. He came from the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, where he served as Second Trumpet. Mr. Larsen was Principal Trumpet at the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, and served as the Solo Cornet with the "President's Own" U.S. Marine Band. He received his Bachelor's of Music degree from Michigan State University, and did graduate work at the Eastman School of Music. He studied with Barbara Butler, who presently teaches at Northwestern University.

Mr. Larsen is a native of Cambridge, Massachusetts. He is the father of two young sons, Zachary and Ethan.

Fox Fehling was born in Iowa City, Iowa. She started playing violin at the age of 9, and by age 15 was soloing with The Cedar Rapids Symphony and The University of Iowa Symphony under James Dixon. Her teacher was Allen Ohmes. Fox moved to New York to attend the Manhattan School of Music on a full scholarship, where she studied with Rafael Bronstein and won the Mischa Elman Award. That led to a tour of Italy with Joseph Seiger, Elman's accompanist. She then studied at Juilliard with Dorothy DeLay, and played in many festivals, including The Meadowbrook School of Music with James Levine, The Spoleto Festival (Italy), and The Aspen Music FestivalMs. Fehling played in The Orlando Symphony and The Lyric Opera Orchestra (as Assistant Principal Second Violin), before Sir George Solti appointed her to The Chicago Symphony in 1979. In 1994, while on a one- year sabbatical from the CSO, she served as assistant concertmaster with The Bergen Philharmonic in Bergen, Norway. In Chicago, Fox has played in Music of the Baroque (1986-present), Bach Week in Evanston (1972-2000), and for 20 years was concertmaster and featured soloist with The Loyola Chamber Orchestra. From 1994-2000, Fox was resident violinist in the Wallowa Lake Chamber Music Festival in Enterprise, Oregon. In the '80s, she was the fiddler for the CS Okies, a Bluegrass/Western Swing band made up of members of the CSO. She also played many school concerts with her string trio as part of the CSO's community education programs, bringing great classical music to thousands of schoolchildren.

Chicago Symphony Orchestra er et av verdens fremste symfoniorkestre og allment anerkjent som et av USAs “Big Five” orkestre. Den verdensberømte dirigenten Riccardo Muti har nettopp sagt ja til å lede orkesteret fra og med sesongen 2010.

På vokalsiden har vi hentet instuktører fra St. Petersburg: Elena Obraztova, professor ved konservatoriet i Moskva, er en av verdens mest anerkjente operainstrukturer, med egne masterclasser blant annet ved Marinskijteateret i St. Petersburg og i Tokyo. I sin karriere som operasanger har hun sunget ved alle de store operahusene verden over, i duetter med blant annaet Domingo og Pavarotti. Jevgenija Gorohovskaya underviser ved Rimsky-Korsakov-akademiet i St. Petersburg.
